On On:
The first big challenge was to brave the rain storm which covered much of the island until 9:30. The next challenge was to find the hash site. We were quietly following ‘hash’ signs until we arrived at 2 pointing in different directions. From there on, no more signs ! Just muddy trails.
By sheer coincidence, several of us met at the top of a hill where we had a discussion. Alan decided to go on a recce. trip (on foot) to see if he could smell out the hares. No luck.
We then decided “to heck with the Hash. Let’s go and find the hunting lodge and relax”.
We found it but the gate was locked. Edwina suddenly arrived with the key and we all parked in the lodge car park. Nice spot with a pretty water fall.
Guess what. It turned out to be the meeting place! The hares arrived at about 11am.
Since the heavy rain had washed all the flour away, Patrice took us on a personally guided tour of the hunting ground. Very nice if a little hilly! With a temperature of about 35 degrees and humidity of 99.9% you can imagine that we were all sweating a little. The brave ones jumped into a muddy pool under the picturesque water fall. The rest of us just stayed smelly. The beer was cool and the food good.
The hare and Alan decided to entertain us with a re-enactment of the dramatic voyage of Mathew Flinders back in 1803 and his landing in Mauritius, which took place near this site.
Phil & Rey represented Australians waving good-by to their great discoverer, Mike Burman represented Mathew Flinders, Gilbert Ferriere represented Governor Deacan, Ella Nimmo took on the demanding role of Flinder’s abandoned wife in England.
All very good so far, the only problem was that there was no action or dialogue ! The show ended to a round of bewildered but enthusiastic applause.
